Cybersecurity News Today: Latest Cyberthreats

Cloud Vulnerability

Cloud adoption creates new difficulties for businesses while worsening existing ones. It enables better collaboration, but at the same time, it exposes organizations to new risks.

Some vulnerabilities in the cloud include the following:

  • account hijacking
  • privacy concerns
  • password sharing
  • file storage and access
  • user profiling
  • cloud-based botnets

Security Weaknesses of IoT Devices

Internet of Things (IoT) devices is also taking over our lives. From smartphones to home automation devices, every single gadget is connected to the Internet. This is the reason why criminals are now focusing on attacks that target these devices.

All it takes is a few simple lines of code to turn your connected doorbells, thermostats, vacuum cleaners, and even pacemakers into a massive botnet army.

Security Risks of Cloud File Storage Services

Businesses are using cloud file storage services for easier collaboration and sharing. Unfortunately, they are exposing sensitive data to hackers by doing so.

Cybercriminals could easily get access to PHI (Protected Health Information) if you store them in the cloud. Storing PHI in the cloud could expose your patients’ private information to potential breaches. Especially if there is a breach in the security of the third-party provider or if your employee mistakenly exposes information to unauthorized parties.

Machine Learning Poisoning

Cybersecurity technologies are also now using machine learning models to detect, analyze and respond to cyberthreats. However, a security application that uses machine learning models can be poisoned by attackers and misused for malicious purposes.

A machine learning poisoning attack involves exploiting the weaknesses of a machine learning model. Attackers can exploit these weaknesses to inject malicious data into the model’s training set. Or get the model to predict results that it was not intended to.

The biggest threat of machine learning poisoning is that it can trick your machine learning model into giving a false positive. For example, an attacker can train the model to recognize his malware as a legitimate application. The poisoned model will then predict that the malicious application is not malicious.

Ransomware

Ransomware is one of the most common cyber threats. It encrypts your files and demands ransom for your data.

This ransomware attack will not only lock your data but also delete them if you do not pay up on time. Some ransomware attacks even demand ransom in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin so that they remain anonymous.

Deepfake

Deepfake is the newest AI-based cyber threat. It can create highly realistic fake videos of people or events. Its quality is also on par with that of Hollywood movies.

People use it for practical jokes or more malicious purposes such as blackmail and fake news.

There are now tools also available to help you detect if a video is fake. These tools use machine learning to detect telltale signs of fakeness in videos.
