cyber and network security

The Difference Between Cyber and Network Security

Cyber and network security each have important roles for your security.

Today, businesses continue to advance in the digital field. So, the security conditions of your organization should advance, too.

Otherwise, you will suffer from a data breach. And it’s going to cost you a lot.

More so, you must secure your data, money, and reputation. And having an advanced cyber and network security system will achieve that for you.

But first, what is cybersecurity, and how does it differ from network security?

What is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the process of protecting your organization. It also includes securing your networks. computers, and data from attackers.

Cybersecurity is important to prevent threats. Thus, data and reputation exposure will not happen.

Also, these threats include the most common social engineering attacks, such as:

  • Phishing – illegal obtaining of personal information. It usually happens when attackers pretend that they are from banks or other companies.
  • Pretexting – like phishing, it is the illegal taking of personal information. It usually happens when attackers imitate a big personality.
  • Baiting – usually happens when attackers leave a USB or CD. These drivers contain malware. If installed, it gives attackers access to the target’s system.
  • Quid pro quo: happens when an attacker would request for your data in exchange for money, gift, or free service

What is Network Security?

Network security is under the cybersecurity. It protects any data flowing over a network.

Besides, the role of network security includes preventing the following:

  • viruses
  • worms
  • Trojan horses
  • hackers
  • denial of service (DOS)
  • zero-day threats
  • spyware
  • adware

Network security is important. It can detect potential threats before it infiltrates your network.

Thus, security components are essential to improve a company’s security posture. These components include:

  • firewalls
  • anti-virus software
  • VPN or virtual private network
  • IDS/IPS or intrusion detection and prevention systems

What are their key differences?

Now that we know their definitions, what are their key differences?

First, we must know that cybersecurity is a subset of information security. On the other hand, network security is a subset of cybersecurity.

Also, cybersecurity protects the data of a device or a server. In contrast, network security protects the data of a network.

Besides, cybersecurity protects the cyber realm. Whilst, network security protects the network realm.

Also, cybersecurity handles the cyberattacks. Yet, network security handles denial-of-service attacks in a network.

Further, cybersecurity blocks cybercrimes and cyber scams. On one hand, network security fights against trojans.

Moreover, cybersecurity strives to protect the whole digital information. However, network security protects network data only.

Conclusion

Information security experts aim to make policies for an effective and secure cyber and network system.

So, they introduced the CIA triad as a guide for this system. The parts of this triad are:

  • Confidentiality – securing your data using encryption
  • Integrity – securing your data is correct and reliable
  • Availability – maintaining and updating when necessary the hardware and software

Because of the rise of cyber and network attackers, your company should have good security.

The primary way to avoid a security incident is by making a response plan. Then, educate your employees about the latest trends in cyber and network security.

Thus, you can get attackers our of your cyber and network realm, as soon as possible.
